Who we are and what this covers

WeatherTotals is a reference almanac of measured weather events and aurora visibility in the United States. We show observations that have already happened, along with the source and the time of observation. This policy applies to weathertotals.com and to any email alerts you sign up for.

What we collect

We collect personal data only when you sign up for email alerts. At that point we store your email address, the page you signed up from, and the time of signup. We do not collect any other personal data from you directly.

How we use it

Every email we send includes an unsubscribe link. You can also ask to be removed at any time through the contact page.

• To send the alerts you asked for.
• To manage your subscription, including processing unsubscribe requests.
• To respond to your enquiries.

Who processes it for us

We use two service providers that act on our behalf. Supabase hosts the database that stores email addresses and signup details. Vercel serves the website and keeps standard server logs, which include IP address, browser type, pages requested, and the time of each request. Vercel acts as our processor for those logs.

Cookies and browser storage

The only thing we store in your browser is a value that remembers whether you chose light or dark appearance. This is kept in your browser's local storage and is never sent to us. You can clear it through your browser settings. We do not use third-party cookies, and our fonts are self-hosted so your browser does not contact another server.

For the weather and aurora data shown here, NOAA, NWS and IEM are the sources, and our servers fetch it before your browser loads the page. Your browser talks only to weathertotals.com.

Advertising and analytics

As of the effective date, we do not use advertising cookies, analytics, or any cross-context behavioural advertising. We do not sell personal information.

We do plan to add display advertising, likely through Journey by Mediavine, and a consent tool will be added at the same time. We also plan to add visitor analytics. A new effective date will appear on this page before either goes live.

Your rights

Under the UK GDPR and the EU GDPR, where they apply, you have the right to access personal data we hold about you, to ask for correction, to ask for deletion, to withdraw consent at any time, and to complain to a supervisory authority. The relevant authority for the operator is the UK Information Commissioner's Office.

If you are in a US state with a privacy law, such as California under the CCPA and CPRA, you have the right to know what personal data we collect, to request deletion, and to ask for correction. Because we do not sell or share personal data for cross-context behavioural advertising, you do not need to opt out of anything. Exercising any of these rights will not lead to discriminatory treatment.

International transfers

Your personal data is processed in the United States, where Vercel and Supabase are based, and in the United Kingdom, where the operator is based. We rely on appropriate safeguards for any transfer of personal data from the UK or EU to the US.

Children

This site is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them. If a parent or guardian believes we have received information about a child, please contact us through the contact page so we can delete it.

Retention

We keep email addresses and signup details only as long as you remain subscribed and for a short period after you unsubscribe or ask to be removed. Server logs are kept for a short period for security and operational purposes.

Changes

If we change this policy, we will post the revised version on this page with a new effective date.
