We send one email per event. The list below shows what triggers one.

Delivery timing depends on email providers, so an update can arrive late. Treat these messages as informational; for dangerous weather, rely on NOAA Weather Radio, Wireless Emergency Alerts, and weather.gov.

What triggers an email

• Aurora updates arrive when the Kp index hits your state's visibility threshold, and include the Kp reading, a timestamp, and that night's cloud cover.
• Snow and rain updates arrive when measured totals start coming in near you.
• Hail email updates arrive when a spotter reports hail near you.
• Name a city and a figure in inches: a spotter report within 25 miles sends an update once snow or rain reaches it. Hail sits at 1 inch and aurora at the city's Kp.
